The short answer
What you need to know
Choose facial tissues for personal use, napkins for table service and paper towels for their labelled drying or wiping purpose. Buy each against its own specification; similar colour or appearance does not make the products interchangeable.

Before you buy
- Specify the job before choosing the paper.
- Check dimensions as well as sheet count.
- Use a separate order line for every format.
What is the difference between the three formats?
The word tissue is often used broadly on a purchasing list. That can result in a supplier quoting a facial box when the team wanted folded washroom towels. Naming the exact use area and format prevents this avoidable mismatch.
| Format | Typical buying purpose | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Facial tissues | Reception desks and personal use | Box or soft pack; sheets and ply |
| Paper napkins | Dining tables and takeaway service | Folded and unfolded size; pack count |
| Paper towels | Labelled hand drying or wiping use | Roll or folded format; dispenser fit |
Translate your site walk into an order list
Start at each location and note what is currently used. A meeting room may need facial boxes and pantry towels; a restaurant can need dining napkins as well as washroom paper. Treat these as different requirements even when they come from the same supplier.
Where a dispenser is fitted, photograph its label and the present refill. If staff keep loose packs on a shelf, measure the available space. Add these details to the purchasing sheet so a replacement can be checked before a large carton order.
Compare value within the correct format
Compare facial tissue boxes by usable sheets of a similar size and specification. For napkins, check the number of finished napkins rather than assuming a pack count means a carton count. For rolls, record length when the manufacturer provides it.
A lower price on the wrong format is not a saving. Test a small quantity in the intended location and ask whether the format dispenses properly, fits the holder and suits the actual task. This is a practical fit check, not a laboratory performance test.
What to put on the quotation request
Send one line per format and state whether alternatives can be proposed. Ask the supplier to identify substitutions explicitly instead of changing the product description silently.
- Use area and intended purpose
- Exact format and preferred product
- Sheet or napkin dimensions
- Ply, unit count and carton count
- Holder or dispenser details when applicable
A few more answers
Common buying questions
Can facial tissues replace washroom hand towels?
Choose a product labelled and specified for the intended task. Facial tissue boxes and dispenser hand towels use different formats; do not assume that one will work in the other system.
What should I order for restaurant tables?
Usually a suitable table or dispenser napkin. Confirm size, fold and quantity against how your team sets tables or packs takeaway orders.
