The short answer
What you need to know
Ply is the number of layers in a finished sheet. Compare usable sheets, sheet size and carton packing separately. A label showing 100 sheets ร 2 ply should not automatically be treated as 200 separately dispensed tissues.

Before you buy
- Separate finished sheets from layers.
- Ask for clarification when a label is ambiguous.
- Compare the same dimensions and use case.
What does ply actually tell a buyer?
One-ply tissue has one layer per sheet and two-ply tissue has two. The layer count is one specification among several. It does not on its own prove that a product is the best choice for your office, dining room or washroom.
Check the manufacturer's wording carefully. Some listings prominently display a total derived from layers, while a purchasing team may be thinking in finished sheets. If the front label and supplier listing appear different, ask for a photo of the complete pack and written confirmation of the usable sheet count.
Compare carton value with a worked example
Suppose a carton contains 40 boxes with 100 finished sheets in each. It holds 4,000 finished sheets. Two layers per sheet do not turn that into 8,000 separately dispensed tissues. If the illustrative carton price is Rs. 8,000, the cost is Rs. 2 per finished sheet before delivery.
This example explains the method and is not a specification or price for a product we sell. Use the exact packing confirmed for your chosen variant. If sheet sizes differ, a price-per-sheet figure alone is not a like-for-like comparison.
Use a small trial to settle practical questions
Place the proposed tissue in the actual box holder or dispenser. Check that sheets pull out as expected and that the pack fits. Record staff feedback on the intended use without converting a small informal trial into a general quality claim.
If you change a product, retain the old label and the approved new specification in your purchasing record. That gives the next person placing an order something precise to compare against.
A clear specification for your supplier
Write quantities in finished units wherever possible. Ask the supplier to quote the same basis for each alternative, so a brand or colour change does not also hide a change in pack size.
- Finished sheets per box or pack
- Layers per finished sheet
- Sheet dimensions
- Boxes or packs per carton
- Delivered cost and confirmed variant
A few more answers
Common buying questions
Does 2-ply always mean better tissue?
No universal ranking follows from ply alone. Compare the size, intended use, dispensing behaviour and confirmed specification of the particular products.
How do I compare a 100 ร 2-ply label?
Confirm whether the manufacturer means 100 finished two-layer sheets. Use the finished sheet count in your cost calculation, not the sum of layers.
