The short answer
What you need to know
Measure the bin and compare the liner’s actual dimensions, leaving enough length to reach the bottom and fold over the rim. Check a sample with the intended load before ordering cartons; a litre label alone does not confirm fit.

Before you buy
- Measure the bin opening and height.
- Ask how the supplier states bag dimensions.
- Test fit and suitability with the site team.
Measure the bin you actually use
Record the bin's height and opening dimensions. For a round bin, note its diameter; for a rectangular bin, record both sides. Photograph the bin and its current liner if the fit is already satisfactory.
A nominal litre capacity is useful for identifying the bin but is not a complete liner specification. Two bins with similar capacity can have different shapes. Ask the supplier to show actual bag width and length, and clarify whether gussets are included in the stated width.
Check the opening and usable length
Open a sample fully and check that it reaches the base without pulling away from the rim. Leave sufficient material for the site's normal folding and closing method. A liner that hangs short wastes space and may be awkward to remove.
Test with the ordinary waste the bin is intended to receive under your facility's procedures. Do not treat a domestic or general-purpose liner as suitable for hazardous or regulated waste; those streams need their own approved specifications.
Compare packing and cost fairly
Confirm bags per roll, rolls per pack and packs or rolls per carton. A quote stating one roll can represent very different bag quantities. Divide the delivered total by the confirmed number of bags for a useful comparison between suitable products.
If thickness or material is specified, keep it on the comparison sheet. Avoid assuming that a colour or an advertising term such as heavy duty is a standardized performance rating. Ask for the actual specification relevant to your intended load.
Standardize where practical
A site may need only a few approved sizes for office desks, pantry bins and larger collection points. Label the storage positions by bin type so staff do not use an oversized bag for every task.
Review consumption by number of bags issued. Before changing supplier, check that the replacement dimensions and packing still match the approved entry.
- Bin opening and height
- Bag width, length and dimension convention
- Intended waste stream
- Bags per roll and carton
- Sample fit and agreed specification

Common buying questions
Can I order a liner using only the bin’s litre capacity?
Use capacity as a starting point, then confirm dimensions and test fit. Capacity alone does not describe the bin shape.
Does heavy duty mean the same thing from every supplier?
Do not assume so. Request the stated material or thickness information and assess the proposed liner against your intended use.
